Before Reading
  • Preview Text
  • Build background information
  • Thing about key words and phrases
During Reading
  • Adjust reading for different purposes
  • Monitor understanding of text and use strategies to understand difficult parts
    • Use context clues
    • Ignore the unclear part and read on to see if it gets clearer
    • Reread the unclear part
    • Reread the sentence(s) before the unclear part
    • Try to connect the unclear part to something you already know
  • Integrate new information with existing knowledge
After Reading
  • Decide if goal for reading has been met
  • Evaluate comprehension
  • Summarize major ideas in a graphic organizer or by retelling major points
  • Apply information to a new situation
