Expectations

Text:  Modern Biology  (Holt, Rinehart, & Winston)

Expectations:

1.  Be Responsible

·        Bring your notebook, planner, textbook & other materials to class.

·        Complete all work on time.

·        Stay on task; use class time wisely.

2.      Be Respectful. *

3.      Be safe.

*Failure to comply with these expectations will result in conference with teacher, phone call home, or referral to the office. Unsafe, harassing, or intimidating behaviors will result in immediate suspension.

Assignments:  They are usually due after one or two days; some assignments and projects take longer. Use a planner for organization. Late work will be accepted for 1/2 credit within the unit time line.  The only exception will be extended absences related to illness.  Absolutely no work will be accepted for credit after this time unless prior arrangements are made!  Labs and tests can be made up before school with me or after school with other biology teachers in rooms 24/25.

Resources & Extra Help:

I teach at both campuses. My office hours are before school at Pine Street and during 1st lunch / after school at Schlador campus. Arrangements can be made to work on science during your study halls, lunch, and with other biology teachers if I am not there. You may also visit my web site http://www.silverfalls.k12.or.us/foxes/staff/read_shari for class information including a homework link, notes, study techniques, science links, college and career information, and more.

Attendance:  Attendance is crucial!  You’ll miss out on lab preparations, group discussions and other experiences for which there are no reasonable substitutes. When you are absent, make the immediate effort to get notes, make up labs & tests, and ask for help. Create a phone list of support friends.  If you have an unexcused absence, you may lose credit for that associated assignment, project, quiz, etc.  Yes, if you ditch class the day of a test, you may permanently miss out on those points as well. OUCH! Make wise decisions!

Tardies:  Don’t be late!  All students will receive one free tardy per semester -otherwise make sure you bring a note. Take care of your needs between classes. Unexcused tardies will result in detention.  If your previous class is far away, take your Biology stuff to that class so you don’t have to go by your locker before coming to class.

Hall Passes:  As a general rule, I don’t give hall passes. A sign out/in clipboard is used when counselors, office personnel, or emergencies, etc., call students out of class.

I am looking forward to a challenging and rewarding year.

Be prepared to work hard- it’s worth it!  ~Mrs. Read

Grading Policy

Grading: Biology is graded through an accumulation of points earned on a variety of assignments, labs, projects, and tests & quizzes. Your percentage of the total points possible determines your letter grade. The scale used is as follows:

90 -100% = A

80 - 89% = B

70 - 79% = C

60 - 69% = D

0 - 59% = F

Approximately two-thirds of your grade is earned through tests, quizzes, and CIM projects and one third of your grade is earned through labs, daily assignments, review sheets, study guides, etc.

Extra credit is sometimes available...keep your eyes and ears open for details.

Assignments are usually due after one or two days; some assignments and projects take longer.
