Expectations

Biology Rules & Guidelines

Text: Biology - Principles & Explorations (Holt, Reinhart, & Winston)

Objectives: Each student will work toward mastery of biological content and processes in the following five units: 1) Study of Life, 2) Continuity of Life, 3) The Environment, 4) Diversity of Life, 5) Animal Kingdom. In addition, he or she will be expected to demonstrate (through CIM Projects and other assignments) the ability to think critically, to communicate effectively, to quantify, to collaborate and to be a self-directed learner.

Expectations:

  • Attend class daily & be on time.
  • Bring materials to class & be ready to go at the bell.
  • Be safe, respectful & on task.*
  • Complete all work on time.
  • Consume food/drink before/after class.
  • No cell phones or music players (iPods, etc.) allowed.

*Unsafe, harassing, or intimidating behaviors will result in immediate suspension.

Attendance: Attendance is crucial! You’ll miss lab preparations, group discussions, and other experiences for which there are no reasonable substitutes. You will earn a zero on assignments, projects, or quizzes during unexcused absences. Yes, if you ditch class the day of a test, you earn a zero. OUCH! Make wise decisions! You are expected to attend class 92% of the semester.

Tardies: Be in your seat with your materials before the bell rings. Don’t be late! If you are, bring a note. Unexcused tardies result in lunch or after school suspensions. Unexcused tardiness will result in detention.

Grading Policy

Grading: Biology is graded through an accumulation of points earned on a variety of assignments, labs, projects, and tests & quizzes. Your percentage of the total points possible determines your letter grade. The scale used is as follows:

90 -100% = A
80 - 89% = B
70 - 79% = C
60 - 69% = D
0 - 59% = F

Approximately two-thirds of your grade is earned through tests, quizzes, and CIM projects and one third of your grade is earned through labs, daily assignments, review sheets, study guides, etc.

Extra credit is often available...keep your eyes and ears open for details.  You can read a current science article for extra credit twice a quarter.

Assignments are usually due after one or two days; some assignments and projects take longer. Late work will be accepted for 1/2 credit within the unit time line. The only exception will be extended absences related to illness. Absolutely no work will be accepted for credit after this time unless prior arrangements are made! Labs and tests can be made up before school with me or after school with other biology teachers in rooms 24/25.
