Physical Science Homework Home
This project is a variation of a Science Olympiad Competition. The objective is to have a one or two person team construct a package to protect an egg (from breaking) which will be dropped free fall from a high spot selected by the teacher. In addition, the package should be built to drop as fast as possible and hit/stay on a target. In otherwords, you want the egg package to drop fast, straight, and to remain in the target area!
Number of Participants: 1
Guidelines:
1. The package size and weight limitation is no more than 20 cm on a side and no more than 1 kg (2.2 pounds). Glass and metal may not be used. The package must be constructed by the students and brought to class the day of the drop. The package may not contain anything that would aid in the package adhering (sticking) to the target.
2. Students will bring their packages on Drop Day and will load large eggs (provided by the teacher). Packages will also be inspected by the teacher for size, weight (including egg), no glass or metal, and no adhering materials. Packages should be labeled with students' names.
3. The package will be dropped free fall by one student from a height determined by the teacher and announced on Drop Day. There will only be one drop. Students will have access to a plumb line to line up their package with the target before dropping.
4. The target is plywood that has a 60cm x 60cm taped area indicated. At least 1/2 of the package must first hit inside this 60cm x 60cm area and ultimately stay.
5. The project is worth 40 points and will be the total of four criteria (see below). An automatic F (0%) results if the directions aren't followed, if the package is thrown, or if it makes a mess.
| A (10 points) | B (8 points) | C (7 points) | F (0 points) | |
| Follows Directions | Yes | --------------- | --------------- | No |
| Target | Hits & Stays | Hits & Bounces off | Doesn't hit target | Thrown |
| Speed | Top third | Middle third | Bottom third | Thrown |
| Egg | No Cracks | Cracks | Broken & Runny (no mess) | Makes a Mess |
